Biography:

Marty Apodaca is the Career Counseling Manager at the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) Office of Career Services where he assists in the growth and development of the Career Development Facilitators. Marty has worked in the field of career development for over a decade and is the current President of the National Career Development Association and Past President of the New Mexico Career Development Association. Marty has publications in the Career Development Quarterly, Career Planning and Adult Development Network, and Career Convergence. Marty has also been published in the Journal of Individual Psychology, Teaching and Supervision in Counseling, and ACA’s VISTAS web magazine.

Marty is a Professional Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Certified Career Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and an endorsed counseling supervisor. Originally from Dexter, NM, Marty has called Albuquerque home for the past 20 years and is devoted to promoting career development for the UNM community, the State of New Mexico, and through advocacy at the national and international level. A passion of Marty’s is exploring and presenting on the interconnections of career and mental health and the implementation of the Career Construction Interview when working with clients. Outside of work, Marty enjoys spending time with his wife, family, friends, and bulldog.

Biography: 

Dr. Scanlon is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor. She holds a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision, and a master’s degree in Counseling. Over the past six years, she has been a clinical therapist with a private practice utilizing her career and mental health expertise with a wide variety of adult clients.  She has been a counselor and administrator at John Carroll University, while supervising many masters and doctoral students through their clinical internships. Dr. Scanlon has enjoyed adjunct instructor positions at the NEOMED School in Rootstown, YSU and JCU in the graduate counseling programs. 

Professional leadership positions have included many years of board involvement and President of both the Ohio Career Development Association, and the National Career Development Association, and mentoring professionals in the career and counseling field to expand their portfolio to join and become involved in professional organizations!  While president of NCDA, she spearheaded the credentialing services offered to career professionals worldwide, and was the first NCDA Credentialing Director.  Dr. Scanlon’s interests include working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem issues, as well as grief and loss issues. Special interests also include challenges associated with life and career transitions including balancing family and work life, adjustment disorders, relationship issues, geriatric challenges, workplace concerns, academic/major selection, and career selection and satisfaction. Through mindfulness, life design, narrative therapy and cognitive behavioral interventions, Cynthia works collaboratively with clients to reach their goals.   

Cynthia loves sharing her experiences as guest lecturer at regional and national workshops and conferences, and is always energized by learning from others in the field! Because of her career expertise, Cynthia has been interviewed by many popular magazines and on-line venues such as Redbook  and Cosmopolitan magazines, Thrillist, EverUp and NBC News.

Intersection of Mental Health and Career Counseling - Where We Were, and Are Now

Presentation Description: Career practitioners may see clients that have experienced some type of life challenge or transition: anticipated or not, voluntary or involuntary -and our client may be experiencing depression, anxiety and reduced self esteem, over a period of time. They come to us for help. In the past, career work was not considered "counseling" - yet as practitioners we assist clients in dealing with the stress/crises and reactions to challenges. A discussion of the interconnectedness of career and mental health will be covered along with several interventions for practitioners. Career work and counseling -we have come a long way!

Kristi Butler, M.Ed., Director of Career Services, Marion Technical College

Kristi Butler is the Director of Career Services at Marion Technical College, where she leads initiatives that support students in career exploration, professional development, and workforce readiness. With a strong commitment to experiential learning, Kristi has been instrumental in expanding opportunities for students to engage with employers through internships, job shadowing, and career-focused programming. She played a key role in developing the JobsXP program, which provides College Credit Plus (CCP) students with hands-on career exploration experiences. Presentation: Navigating Career Regret for Students: The Importance of Reframing

Oscar McKnight, Ph.D., LPCC-S, LSW, NCC, Director, Psychological Counseling and Health Services, Ashland University

Dr. McKnight is a seasoned academic and researcher committed to lifelong learning. His expertise includes statistical assessment, forecasting analysis, psychometrics, consumer behavior, career testing, and Human-Aided Artificial Intelligence (HAAI). He has held the position(s) of Adjunct Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the College of Business and Economics. Dr. McKnight has been the Director of Psychological Counseling and Health Services, where he oversaw career development for over thirty years. With over three decades of experience, Dr. McKnight has a substantial publication record and has presented his research at numerous professional conferences. While his primary focus lies in proprietary research and field investigations, he remains an active scholar, as evidenced by his multiple Best Paper and Distinguished Paper Awards.

Lenroy Jones, M.A., DTM, Director, Career Services, Columbus State Community College


Lenroy Jones has been dedicated to planning, developing, and executing major enterprise-wide initiatives, resulting in consistent and scalable achievements. Throughout his career, he has championed Diversity programs, Student Success, and policies, leveraging best practice research, creative business strategies, and strong business relationships. Mr. Jones has been recognized for the tactical implementation of essential action plans. Additionally, he has used data to define target objectives, make presentations, assess financial implications and outcomes of decisions, and advance data-driven decision-making among leadership.

Presentation Description: What is career regret? According to Zeelenberg and Pieters (2007), it is an unpleasant feeling coupled with a clear self-blame concerning its causes and firm wishes to undo the current career situation. In brief, a feeling of discontent or guilt is involved when an individual assesses personal shortcomings or missed career opportunities. This qualitative study examines career regret from a college student’s perspective before they enter the job market. Career regret is operationalized as an anticipatory function, typically projecting future outcomes related to a selected major. Results found five distinct phases of career regret manifest throughout the higher education experience.

Ana Berríos-Allison, Ph.D., LPC, Staff Training and Development Coordinator, The Ohio State University


Dr. Ana C. Berríos Allison is a bilingual licensed professional counselor in Ohio and a certified spiritual director. Her counseling interests relate to the influences of family dynamics in career decision-making, grief and life transitions, the emotional, spiritual value, and social impact of decision-making, and the importance of resiliency and intercultural counseling. Ana is an adjunct faculty in Ohio and has published and presented at numerous conferences about her academic interests. Dr. Berrios Allison has been recognized as the recipient of the Ohio Career Development Association (OCDA) Bob Windle Leadership Award and the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) Charles “Chuck” Weaver Award. Additionally, Ana offers spiritual direction within the community, listening to and accompanying individuals as they discern the movements of the divine in their lives. She has been recognized nationwide with the Paulist Fathers’ Spirit of Isaac Hecker Award. Furthermore, Ana volunteers at the OSU James Care for Life co-facilitating career counseling workshops and one-on-one(s) for cancer survivors and their caregivers.


Jeff Wong, M.A., LPC, Licensed Professional Counselor, Dandelion Counseling and Wellness


Jeff Wong is a licensed professional counselor who is truly passionate about advocating for social justice, multiculturalism, and systemic change by nurturing hope, resilience, and community empowerment.


Presentation Description: Artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest trend in the professional world. This session will examine the current applications of AI in career counseling, to deepen our understanding of the use of technology and its potential impact. By analyzing how AI is utilized in areas such as self-exploration, occupational information, data gathering, decision-making, and job search tools, this session will provide counselors/coaches with valuable insights on effectively leveraging this technology. Furthermore, we will discuss the role of the counselor, ethical considerations, and cultural factors in informing counselors about the implications of this emerging technology for the counseling profession.

Biography: Katie Drown is a seasoned stage performer with over 14 years of experience in improv comedy. She first immersed herself in Columbus, Ohio’s growing comedy scene in 2014, quickly establishing herself as a professional performer and educator. Before co-founding WitWorks, Katie spent a decade working in tech mobility startups, including Uber and Spin. At Spin, she led a global Learning & Development program for three years, where she saw firsthand the power of improv principles in strengthening communication, leadership, and team dynamics. Inspired by this, she created WitWorks to help businesses and individuals build stronger, more connected teams. Katie finds immense joy in designing and facilitating improv-based workshops and training for corporate teams, adult improv enthusiasts across Ohio, and college improv troupes nationwide. Newton is a Career Catalyst at Ohio Wesleyan University working directly with students in the Social Impact and Humanities/Arts Career Communities. He received his Bachelors of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University studying Sociology and Psychology in addition to his MPA from Cleveland State University. His passion is finding out the best way to blend empathy, nerdy fandoms, and career coaching into a system that prioritizes the student. He is the biggest nerd you will ever meet and would love to learn what you are nerdy about!


Michelle Norris, M.Ed., LPC, GTA Buckeye Careers, Student Employee Experience Program (SEE), The Ohio State University

Michelle is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Ohio and is currently pursuing a PhD at The Ohio State University in Counselor Education, with a focus on career design and occupational wellness across the lifespan. She is concurrently pursuing a Master of Public Administration and Leadership at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. At present, Michelle works with Ohio State’s Buckeye Careers Student Employee Experience Program, developing and implementing mental health and well-being programming for student employees and their supervisors on OSU’s main and regional campuses.


Sarah JanTausch, M.S., Founder, SRJ Coaching and Consulting

Sarah JanTausch (Jan-Tosh) is the founder of SRJ Coaching and Consulting (valuesbasedcareers.com). She is an Executive & Career Coach, Speaker, and Trainer who works with individuals to create Values-Based Careers and to unlock the hidden job market. She coaches individuals on career pivots, Generosity-Based Networking (TM), and aligning total vocational impact with personal values. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in Politics & Government and a Master of Science in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University. Sarah is an active member of the National Career Development Association having served as a member, State Coordinator, and upcoming Co-Chair of the NCDA Government Relations Committee. 

Before her work in the career development industry, she served Ohio’s Governor and Lt. Governor in various leadership roles including Statewide Outreach Director and Regulatory Policy Advocate. She led a team and advocated for effective regulatory, education, and economic policy. She has served on several nonprofit and public boards and is active in her hometown of Delaware (Ohio) including the Delaware Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, a domestic violence shelter called Turning Point, and the City of Delaware’s Parks & Recreation Advisory Board.

Career development practitioners will learn how to navigate these policies to better support clients in balancing personal and professional goals. Additionally, the session will address how government initiatives are preparing individuals for the future of work. Participants will gain practical insights into integrating regulatory knowledge into their advisory practices, fostering career growth while promoting work-life integration for clients.

Sarah Grace McCollough serves as the Assistant Director for Career Services at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash, where she leads a growing team supporting 5,000+ regional UC students in their career development journey. With a Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education, Sarah Grace specializes in empowering first and second-year college students to secure entry-level internships, co-ops, and full-time employment opportunities. Since working in this role, Sarah Grace has strategically implemented a "Career Champions" program designed to maximize impact and support UC Blue Ash faculty/staff become advocates of how to utilize the Career Services office and 24/7 resources. 

J.D. Fye, B.A., Program Coordinator for Career Services, University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash College

J.D. Fye is the Program Coordinator for Career Services at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash. While brand new to the Career Services profession, he has over a decade of experience serving the recruiting and staffing industry in various customer service roles for an applicant tracking software system. Eager to learn more about helping students achieve their career goals, he's recently joined Sarah Grace's team and plans to use his practical experience to help those he serves with resume building, interview preparation, and the coordination of job fairs and other career-focused events.

Biography: Dr. Lisa R. Bradley-Glenn, Ed.D., serves as the Assistant Vice President of Special Programs, Projects & Outreach at James A. Rhodes State College, where she leads faculty, community, and career development initiatives. Her strategic leadership was instrumental in the college receiving the Community Enrichment Corporate Leadership Award in 2022. With extensive experience in both K-12 and higher education settings, Dr. Bradley-Glenn is dedicated to fostering professional growth across diverse educational landscapes. As a motivational speaker, she has presented at organizations including the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), NAACP, Honda of America, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and James A. Rhodes State College. Additionally, she serves as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and Quality Matters. Her commitment to community service is evident through her youth mentorship and fundraising efforts, which have secured significant resources for underrepresented students to explore college opportunities. Over time, career counseling has expanded to include diverse populations, embedding DEI initiatives that advocate for workplace equity. Presenter: Ankit Shah, M.Ed., M.A., CEO, Inclusive Employee Consulting, LLC

Biography: Ankit has more than ten years of experience in the culture & engagement, talent management, career management field within higher education, healthcare, and K-12 settings. He had the privilege of assisting underserved as well as underrepresented populations in his entire professional journey, specifically in the lens of P-20. Now, due to his diverse educational and professional journey, he can use all his experiences to work with the multi-generational professionals to assist with their diverse talent management, culture, and engagement needs across organizations and industries. Ankit currently serves as the Vice President for the Central Ohio Belonging Consortium and leads their overall membership and programming efforts for the organization. He also serves on the Workforce Development Committee at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Ankit holds a BS in Early Childhood Education from University of Toledo and a MEd in Higher Education Administration with specialization in Student Affairs from North Carolina State University. He graduated with his second master’s degree, MA in Workforce Development & Education with specialization in Adult Education & Human Resources Development from The Ohio State University.

 Presentation: Let's Talk Ethics! 2024 NCDA Code of Ethics: Application and Best Practice

Presenter: Mary Steiner Iiames, Ph.D., LSC, Program Director and Assistant Professor, Winebrenner Theological Seminary

Biography: Dr. Mary Steiner Iiames is currently an assistant professor and the Director of the Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling Program at Winebrenner Theological Seminary. Dr. Iiames practiced as a public school counselor for 31 years. She teaches both Legal & Ethical Issues in Counseling and Career Counseling in Winebrenner’s counselor education program. She enjoys presenting on the topics of law and ethics related to professional counseling in various settings. Additionally, she provides pro-bono career development, decision-making, and guidance for emerging adults in her community.

Presentation Description: This will not be boring reading of the 2024 NCDA Code of Ethics! We will take a thorough look at the ethical standards that inform our professional practices. Working with individuals (especially minors!) can cause some messy situations! Tricky case studies will be used to help participants apply the code of ethics and determine best practices. An Ethical Decision-Making Model will be introduced to help with the application process. Throughout the workshop, participants will be able to share their experiences, ask questions, and consult with their professional peers.

Presentation: Integrating Career Education Student Outcomes in a First-Year Seminar

Presenter: Crystal Pfander, MSW, Assistant Director of First Year Seminars, College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies, University of Cincinnati

Biography: Crystal Pfander is an Assistant Director of First Year Seminars in the College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she earned a Master of Social Work degree in 2019 and a Bachelor of Science in Human Development in 2017 from The Ohio State University and has since centered her career around student and career development in higher education. In addition to supporting students 1:1, Crystal loves to be in the classroom and has been teaching courses in career development, first-year experience, and leadership since 2019. When Crystal is not at work, you can find her spending time outdoors with her dog, Apollo, exploring local coffee shops and breweries with her husband Drew, and flexing her creativity with her Cricut.


Presentation Description: University of Cincinnati (UC) embeds career student learning outcomes throughout a student’s undergraduate experience. This session reviews how a UC first-year seminar frames student transitionary topics within career education, provides examples of career discernment exercises, and addresses professional preparation skill building activities. Through this interactive session, participants will develop strategic opportunities and practical examples to embed career education topics within their courses. Participants will also develop an action plan for introducing career education topics in their first-year courses, including identifying key campus stakeholders.
