NOW ACCEPTING PROPOSALS FOR THE 2020 CONFERENCE!

The Ohio Career Development Association is seeking proposals for our 2020 conference, happening on Friday, May 29th, 2020 in Columbus Ohio!

We are looking for presenters focused on innovative ideas, research, theories, programs, and strategies to help our attendees prepare clients for the workforce.

You are welcome to submit a proposal for any career-related topic, but we are especially interested in subjects related to: 

  • Equity – Content that focuses on promoting equal access to services and opportunities among diverse populations. 
  • Innovation – Emerging trends, concepts, theories, and technologies in career development.
  • Practical Strategies – Sessions that leave participants with tangible tools, strategies, and resources to utilize in their day to day work.
  • Engagement – New and creative ways of engaging students, clients, employers, community, and other stakeholders.

The 2019 OCDA conference was held on Friday, May 31st, 2019 at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea. The theme of this year’s conference was Inclusion in Career Services.

Below is a summary of our speakers and their presentations.

This year we had the pleasure of honoring four award winners during our lunch at the conference.

Outstanding Graduate Student Award Winners: Vincent Consiglio and Logan Vess

Outstanding New Professional Award Winner: Ramascus Abdul Dollar

Bob Windle Leadership Award Winner: Dr. Kim Gilliam

Dr. Kathy Evans, NCDA President-Elect, was our Keynote presenter. Her presentation, “Social Justice, Social Action, and Breaking Barriers in Career Practice,” was designed to empower career practitioners to become active in combatting oppression in the world of work.  

Dr. Nina Talley, Director of Career Services at Wilmington College, discussed identifying and cultivating soft skill development for Generation Z through internships.

Nancy Ronevich, Director of Career Services at Franciscan University of Steubenville, presented on Type Functions, both introverted and extroverted, and how they work together to give us balance and a better understanding of how introversion and extraversion affect the functions.  

Doanise Thompson and Caitlin Conrad, both Career Coaches at The Ohio State University, discussed how to become a more inclusive career practitioner and how to evaluate self, biases, attitude and beliefs.

Franceska Jones, Career Coordinator at Notre Dame College, and Elizabeth Presley, Certified Career Coach at Notre Dame College, presented on a new model for higher education, with a strong connection between the Career Services office and their Academic Support Center for Students with Disabilities.

Katie Flanigan, Career Advisor at Baldwin Wallace University, and Gabriela Mendicino, Career Communities Engagement Coordinator at Baldwin Wallace University, discussed modern barriers that are essential to understand in order to help undergraduate students reach their potential. 

Bethani Burkhart, Director of Career and Academic Development at Hiram College, and Leigh Mascolino, Director of Career Development at Ohio Wesleyan University, presented on tangible career-based activities and their related career theories.

    "As student-facing personnel, you work with an array of students from different backgrounds. Of these students, first-generation learners seek to engage in their education to meet academic and career outcomes. Guided by research and topic exploration, this presentation seeks to provide insight into exploring the first-generation college student identity and the meaningful interventions you may implement to orient their short- and long-term career aspirations."
